You can access the server by entering the server's IP name (afp2.opendoor.com) into the Chooser
What is an AppleShare IP Server? AppleShare IP uses the simplicity of the Mac's Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) as opposed to FTP for transfering files, resulting in a more powerful, intuitive, drag-and-drop user interface. AppleShare is also significantly more secure than FTP (or even HTTP). FTP, for instance, sends passwords in clear text. Finally, since the AppleShare client is built into Macintosh systems, Mac users no longer need to run a separate application to access the server.
Why would I need to use Open Door's AppleShare IP Server? You don't need to access it, but you might very well want to use it, since it provides a simpler, more secure way of publishing your Web pages. Open Door's AppleShare IP Server is available as a part of all WebDoor Pro accounts. Prior to AppleShare IP, account holders had to dial-up to Open Door to transfer files via AppleShare or use FTP with their local Internet connection. Now WebDoor Pro account holders get the best of both worlds -- AppleShare's drag and drop access through their local Internet connection.
How is the AppleShare IP Server set up? The AppleShare IP Server provides access to the same set of folders as the web server. The only difference is that access is obtained through a URL of the form afp://user-name@afp2.opendoor.com/web2/.
What do I need to do to use the AppleShare IP Server? Anyone who already has FTP access to www2.opendoor.com will automatically get AFP access (if you're on www.opendoor.com, we'll have to move you). You can access the server by entering the server's IP name (afp2.opendoor.com) into the Chooser. In many cases you may wish to access the server through a URL however. To enable AFP access through Internet-standard URLs like the one listed above, Open Door Networks developed and is selling an application called AFP Engage! As a WebDoor Pro account holder, you are entitled to a free version of AFP Engage! simply by sending us an email request. Upon receipt of your request, Open Door will issue an email telling you how to download your FREE copy of AFP Engage! Last you'll need to download a copy of AppleShare Client 3.7. This can be found at Apple Software Library. Look for the file AppleShare Client ZM-3.7 img hqx. This new AppleShare Client is also included with the new Mac OS 8. The client requires Open Transport version 1.1.2 or later.
