Additional Account Options
Open Door Networks, Inc., in
concert with the city of Ashland, provides high-speed, cable modem based
Internet access to Macintosh users within Ashland. Here are some additional
account services offered to augment your AFN account.
Static IP Address Service
- A regular AFN account assigns your computer a dynamic, that is a periodically changing, IP address. The static IP address service option assigns your computer a non-changing IP address, which greatly simplifies certain internet operations. A web or other server with a static IP is much easier to manage, and having a static IP address can make it much easier to find your computer on the internet. The static IP address option adds $30.00 per month per static IP address to your monthly bill.
Additional (Dynamic) IP Address
- Most multiple computer home networks use a device called a router (see our Multiple Machines page). This device acts as a gateway, receiving the single, dynamic IP address assigned to it, and then creating internal IP addresses and providing them to your connected machines. Sometimes, it is more desirable for each computer to have its own IP address. In some uses, this would increase your network speed slightly, and make these machines more accessible from the outside world. This option is also necessary if you do not have a router, but an Ethernet hub, which only splits your AFN signal but does not assign any additional IP address to any connected computers. Since each machine on the network needs an IP address to connect to the Internet, adding an IP addresses to your account enables additional machines to connect without the need to purchase a router. This option adds only $5.00 per month per additional IP address.

Lite Accounts
- Some of our customers move out of Ashland, and are then unable to use their AFN service, but wish to keep their Open Door e-mail accounts active for future use, and to have access to our other services, such as our Mac-specific technical support and personal websites. Other customers live in areas that are unable to access AFN. For this reason, we offer a "Lite" account. A Lite account includes all of your Open Door mailboxes and all other non-AFN Open Door services, such as websites and our Macintosh support and training services. Lite accounts do NOT include AFN internet service. A lite account is only $10.00 per month.
iBook Rental Program
- Open Door Networks keeps a small inventory of iBooks available for temporary customer use. These machines vary in terms of speed and capability, but all are able to access the Internet and check email (see our iBook Program page). Please contact us for details.
Technical Support
- Open Door Networks offers on-site and office visit technical support and tutorials on most Macintosh-related issues, at the rate of $75.00 per hour (one hour minimum for on-site work, half-hour minimum for office visits). As part of this service, we are able to purchase and provide you with Macintosh compatible hardware. Please call 201-3029 for details.
