AFP Engage! User's Guide
Introduction
AFP Engage!, a key component in Open Door's mission to "provide
Internet solutions that are as easy to use as the Macintosh itself,"
is a client-side application which simplifies browsing, selection
and access to AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) servers in Internet
and intranet environments. AFP Engage! helps restore the ease-of-use
which would otherwise be lost as Macintosh networks migrate from
AppleTalk to Internet protocols. With AFP Engage! access to AppleShare,
personal file sharing and other AFP servers on IP networks is
as easy as on AppleTalk.
AFP Engage! provides two key ease-of-use features:
- Dynamic server browsing - When used in concert with Open Door's ShareWay IP 3.0 (or other
servers which register with Apple's new Service Location Protocol
implementation in Mac OS 8.5 and later), AFP Engage! acts just
like the AppleTalk Chooser, but for IP-based servers. AFP Engage!
provides a list of servers on your IP intranet which are available,
and enables you to simply double-click the desired server.
- AFP URL processing - AFP Engage! works in concert with your Web browser, email reader
or other Internet application to enable it to understand and process
AFP URLs. A good example of the use of AFP URLs is Open Door's
AppleShare-based Info-Mac shareware mirror, which is at the URL
afp://afp.opendoor.com/info-mac/. With AFP Engage! installed, users can simply click on this URL
to have the server automatically mounted on their desktop.
What's New In AFP Engage! 2.0
- Chooser-like point-and-click access to ShareWay IP servers - Dynamically find, display and initiate access to ShareWay IP
3.0 servers on your intranet through a Chooser-like point-and-click
user interface (requires Mac OS 8.5 or later--Mac OS 8.6 or later
is recommended).
- Internet Control Panel support - With Mac OS 8.5 and later, the Internet Control Panel provides,
among other things, a simple way of specifying AFP helper apps.
AFP Engage! can register with the Internet Control Panel with
one simple menu command..
- Online Help - With Mac OS 8.5 and later, Apple Help makes online help available
through the Help Center and, with OS 8.6 and later, through AFP
Engage!'s Help menu.
